API 602 SW & Threaded End ASTM B62 Forged Bronze Globe Valve
BOPIN ASTM B62 Forged Bronze Globe Valve, Socket Weld End
| BOPIN forged bronze globe valves with socket-weld (SW) ends are compact shut-off and flow-regulating valves designed for small-bore piping systems. They are suitable for applications where a reliable metallic valve, compact installation, and a welded pipe connection are required. A technical point should be clarified at the beginning: ASTM B62 is officially a specification for composition bronze or ounce-metal castings, not a forging specification. The current ASTM designation is ASTM B62-17(2025), covering Copper Alloy UNS C83600, commonly known as 85-5-5-5 bronze. It specifically covers cast components used for valves, flanges, and fittings. Therefore, if the BOPIN product is marketed as a “forged B62 bronze globe valve,” the purchase specification should clearly identify whether B62/C83600 applies to the bronze material while the body manufacturing process is actually forged, or whether the body is a B62 casting. This distinction is important for technical documentation and inspection. | ![]() |
1. Product Introduction
The BOPIN B62 bronze globe valve is designed around the globe-valve principle: a movable disc travels toward and away from a stationary seat to control fluid flow.
Compared with a simple isolation valve, a globe valve can provide useful throttling capability because the disc position can be adjusted progressively. The trade-off is that globe valves normally create greater pressure loss than straight-through gate valves.
The socket-weld end provides a compact welded connection. The pipe is inserted into the valve socket and welded around the outside of the joint. For valves designed under ASME B16.34, socket dimensions are associated with ASME B16.11 requirements.
For BOPIN customers requiring small-size bronze globe valves, this configuration can provide a practical solution for water, steam, air and other compatible fluid services, subject to the final pressure-temperature rating and material compatibility.

3. ASTM B62 Bronze Material
ASTM B62-17(2025) identifies the alloy covered by the specification as Copper Alloy UNS C83600. The alloy is commonly called 85-5-5-5 bronze, reflecting its approximate copper, tin, lead and zinc composition.
The specified composition includes approximately:
- Copper: 84–86%
- Tin: 4–6%
- Lead: 4–6%
- Zinc: 4–6%
ASTM B62 also specifies limits for elements such as nickel, iron, antimony, sulfur, phosphorus, aluminum and silicon.
The material specification is particularly relevant because bronze used in valve bodies must provide the required combination of mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and compatibility with the service medium.
Published ASTM B62 data for C83600 indicate a minimum tensile strength of approximately 30 ksi (205 MPa), minimum yield strength of 14 ksi (95 MPa) and minimum elongation of 20%, subject to the applicable standard requirements and test method.
Important manufacturing clarification
ASTM B62 should not automatically be described as a forging standard. ASTM itself defines B62 as a specification for castings.
Consequently, if a customer specifically requires a forged body, BOPIN should provide the appropriate forging material specification and manufacturing documentation separately, while identifying C83600/B62 only where it genuinely applies.
4. Standards of SW End and Threaded End for Forged Steel Valves
Forged steel valves, especially small-size API 602 gate, globe, and check valves, are commonly supplied with socket-weld (SW) ends or threaded ends. The end-connection standards are important for ensuring dimensional compatibility, safe installation, and reliable piping connections.
For socket-weld end valves, the valve design may comply with API 602, while the socket-weld-end dimensions are generally specified in accordance with ASME B16.11 and the applicable requirements of ASME B16.34. The pipe is inserted into the valve socket and welded around the joint, providing a compact and strong permanent connection.
For threaded-end forged steel valves, the commonly specified connection is NPT (National Pipe Taper). The thread dimensions and requirements are covered by ASME B1.20.1. Depending on the project or customer's requirements, other internationally recognized pipe-thread standards may be specified.
For BOPIN forged steel valves, a typical specification can include API 602 design, ASME B16.34 requirements, SW ends to the applicable ASME requirements, or NPT threaded ends to ASME B1.20.1, with pressure testing according to API 598 when specified.
Customers should confirm valve size, pressure class, material, end connection, thread type, and applicable standards when placing an RFQ.
5. Globe Valve Construction
A typical BOPIN bronze globe valve consists of several major components:
Body
The body contains the pressure boundary, flow passage, seat and socket-weld connections. The material must be selected according to the specified service and pressure-temperature requirements.
Bonnet
The bonnet provides access to the internal components and supports the stem assembly. The exact bonnet design can be union, screwed or another approved configuration.
Stem
The stem transfers handwheel movement to the disc. A rising-stem configuration gives the operator a visual indication of valve opening position.
Disc
The disc moves toward the valve seat to reduce or stop flow. Its material and geometry can be selected according to the service medium.
Seat
The seat provides the sealing surface against the disc. Depending on the design, it may be integral metal-to-metal construction or incorporate a specified soft-seating material.
Packing
Stem packing prevents fluid from escaping along the stem. PTFE and other application-specific packing materials may be specified.
Handwheel
The handwheel provides manual operation. Turning it clockwise or counterclockwise moves the disc through the stem mechanism, depending on the valve's specified operating direction.
6. Design Features
Compact Construction
The small-size SW configuration minimizes installation space and is suitable for compact piping layouts.
Flow Regulation
Unlike a simple on/off valve, the globe-valve configuration can be used for controlled flow adjustment when the valve is specifically designed and rated for throttling service.
Bronze Construction
C83600 bronze provides a copper-based material option for compatible water, marine and general fluid-service applications. Actual service suitability must be confirmed against the fluid, temperature, pressure and applicable regulations.
Welded Connection
The SW end eliminates the need for flange bolts and gaskets at the valve connection.
Manual Operation
The handwheel provides straightforward local operation without requiring an actuator.
7. Applications
A B62 bronze globe valve with SW ends can be considered for applications such as:
- Water piping
- General utility piping
- Air systems
- Steam-related small-bore piping, where the selected material and rating are suitable
- Building services
- Marine and general industrial systems
- Auxiliary piping
- Small-diameter process piping
- Equipment connection piping
The application should always be checked against the valve's certified pressure-temperature rating.
For example, a published bronze-valve specification can use ASTM B62 C83600 for globe-valve bodies, while the actual valve rating and design depend on the applicable valve standard and manufacturer design.
8. How to Operate the BOPIN Globe Valve
Opening
- Inspect the valve and surrounding piping.
- Confirm that the valve is suitable for the operating medium.
- Turn the handwheel gradually in the specified opening direction.
- Allow the disc to move away from the seat progressively.
- Open the valve to the required operating position.
- Avoid unnecessarily forcing the handwheel against the mechanical stop.
Closing
- Reduce flow gradually when required.
- Turn the handwheel in the specified closing direction.
- Allow the disc to approach the seat smoothly.
- Continue until the required shut-off position is reached.
- Do not use excessive force.
Throttling
If the valve is approved for throttling service, adjust the handwheel gradually until the desired flow condition is obtained.
A globe valve is generally better suited to flow regulation than a gate valve, but continuous throttling can increase erosion, noise and pressure loss depending on velocity and fluid characteristics.
9. Installation of SW-End Globe Valves
Before installation, verify:
- Valve size
- Flow direction
- Pressure class
- Material
- Pipe outside diameter
- Socket dimensions
- Welding procedure
- Valve orientation
- Service temperature
- Compatibility with the process fluid
Clean the pipe and valve socket before assembly. Insert the pipe to the required position while maintaining proper alignment. Welding should be performed according to the approved welding procedure.
The valve should be protected from excessive heat transfer during welding when required by the manufacturer's installation instructions, particularly where internal nonmetallic components are present.
After installation, the piping system should undergo the specified inspection and pressure/leak testing before being placed into service.
10. Inspection and Quality Control
For BOPIN valve production, quality control can include:
Material inspection:
Verify the material designation and chemical composition against the purchase specification.
Dimensional inspection:
Check valve face dimensions, socket dimensions, body dimensions and critical machining areas.
Visual inspection:
Check body surfaces, machining quality, casting/forging condition where applicable and markings.
Seat inspection:
Verify the condition and machining of the disc and seat surfaces.
Pressure testing:
Conduct the required shell and closure tests according to the applicable testing specification or customer requirement.
Packing inspection:
Verify stem packing installation and gland condition.
Final inspection:

12. Why Choose BOPIN Bronze Globe Valves?
BOPIN can support customers from technical specification confirmation through manufacturing, inspection and export delivery.
For bronze globe valves, the most important point is not simply choosing a valve by material name. Material standard, manufacturing method, pressure rating, end connection, seat design and service conditions must work together.
BOPIN can assist customers in confirming these parameters before an order is finalized.
For OEM projects, BOPIN can also work according to approved drawings and customer specifications, including customized markings and documentation where required.
The production process can include material verification, machining, assembly, pressure testing, final inspection and export packing. This approach helps customers receive valves that correspond to the agreed technical specification rather than relying only on a generic product description.
